Subscribing to LISTSERV and Sending E-mail

This assignment will familiarize you with and assist you in subscribing to the LISTSERV system. You will need a valid email address in order to do this. If you havent yet established one and youre having trouble, see me. Or you can sign up for a free University of Arizona email account here: https://account.arizona.edu/.

When you have successfully subscribed to the LISTSERV, you will then send me an email message following the outline in Part 2.

Part 1 Subscribing to the LISTSERV

  1. Go to your email program and begin a new email message.
  2. Address this email message to:
  3. [email protected]

  4. Leave the subject line blank.
  5. In the message body, type ONLY the following (substituting your own first and last names for the italicized text). There are no spaces in the list name (BALLAM111):
  6. SUBSCRIBE BALLAM111 yourfirstname yourlastname

    EXAMPLE: SUBSCRIBE BALLAM111 Wilbur Wildcat

*Please remove any email "signatures" prior to sending. A signature may confuse the LISTSERV system and prevent your request from being accepted.

  7. Send the message.
  8. You will receive a reply from the LISTSERV system informing you that your request was received, and that in order to process it and verify your email address, you will have to reply within 48 hours. To do this, you will have to either go to a URL/web address (included in the message), or reply to the message with "ok" (without the quotation marks, and with no other text in the email body) in the body of the message.
  9. When you reply, you should almost immediately receive a series of messages from the LISTSERV system. These messages will inform you that you are officially subscribed and will include instructions on how to use the LISTSERV.
  10. From this point on, as long as your email address stays the same, you will not have to do anything LISTSERV-related throughout the semester. I will send messages to the class LISTSERV, and each student will receive a copy of this message in their email box. This will be my primary means of contacting each of you.

Part 2 Sending me an email.

This exercise will accomplish a few things. First, it will ensure that you have a valid and working email address. Second, it will show me that you know how to send email. Third, it will give me some information about your level of computer experience (so I can attempt to better plan the lectures!)

  1. Go to your email program and begin a new message.
  2. Address this message to:
  3. [email protected]

  4. Type your name and Assignment 1 in the subject line (i.e. Wilbur Wildcat Assignment 1).
  5. In the body of the message, include the following information.
    1. Your level of experience with computers (how much have you used them, what software can you use, how much do you know about whats inside them, etc.)
    2. What you hope to learn in this class
    3. What you primarily use the computer for
    4. Something interesting about you
  6. Send the message!

Have fun!
